Mr Win
Mr Win put up another really likeable performance to win the 0-110 seven-furlong handicap at Newmarket on Saturday. There is a chance that this performance will be under-rated, because a lot of the post-race attention centred on the fact that the favourite Speculative Bid was unlucky, that he didn't get the gap until it was too late. However, Mr Win kept on really well, and it is debatable whether or not the favourite would have caught him however the race had panned out. The winner won by just a neck and a half a length, but it is probable that he had more in hand than the bare winning margin, and the winning time was good, the fastest of the three seven-furlong races run on the day by a fair way.
Chris Wall's horse appears to be a horse who only does enough, and he seems to thrive on this July Course. His last three races now have been there, his record in those races is 211, and he won a handicap at the track last year on his only previous visit. He was racing off a mark of 96 here, 3lb higher than the mark off which he won a decent handicap at the July meeting. The handicapper has raised him another 2lb, but that is fair. He continues to progress and, because he probably only does enough, he is a difficult horse for the handicapper to assess.
He won over six furlongs last year, but seven furlongs appears to be his trip now. He will be of interest wherever he goes next, but particularly if he is back at Newmarket's July Course, and ideally over seven furlongs again.
