Best In The World
Best In The World put up a nice performance to finish third in the Munster Oaks at Cork on Sunday.
Aidan O'Brien's filly was nicely settled at the back of the field through the early stages of the race by Michael Hussey, but the early pace was not overly strong. Colm O'Donoghue was able to dictate a pace to suit his filly, Best In The World's stable companion Pretty Perfect, with the result that it was probably an advantage to race handily. Pretty Perfect made just about all the running, and two of the three fillies who filled the three places behind her, Shamreen and Twitch, raced in second and a share of third from early. Best In The World was the only filly who was able to get close from the rear.
Sent off a 20/1 shot, the Galileo filly travelled well into the home straight along the inside. She appeared to hang a little to her left as her rider asked her to improve but, once on an even keel, she stayed on really nicely all the way to the line to take third place behind Pretty Perfect and Shamreen, both nice fillies. Also, the winning time was over a second and a half faster than the time that Alveena clocked in winning the Cork Derby over the same course and distance a half an hour later.
Winner of a listed race on her second and final run last year as a juvenile, Best In The World was well beaten in the Salsabil Stakes on her debut this season, and she faded after making the running in the Musidora Stakes. This was much more like it from her though, it was her first run over a mile and a half, and she saw out the trip well.
A daughter of Galileo out of Lockinge Stakes winner Red Evie, and therefore a sister to Found and Magical Dream, she will be of interest wherever she goes next. She could be a lively outsider in the Irish Oaks, but she would be of greater interest in another Group 3 or in a Group 2 contest for now, perhaps in something like the Kilboy Estate Stakes on Irish Oaks weekend, in which she holds an entry.
