Suvenna
Suvenna put up a good performance to win the seven-furlong handicap at Listowel on Sunday.
Bounced out of the gate by Shane Foley, Michael Halford's filly was a little keen in anything in front initially, with Shepherds Crook up on her outside, but she quickly settled into a nice even rhythm. The pair of them had a nice break on their field as they left the back straight, and Suvenna kicked off the home turn and quickly put two lengths between herself and her closest pursuer. She kicked clear at the furlong pole and raced enthusiastically all the way to the line to come home three and a half lengths clear of Zebgrey, who came through to take second place off Shepherds Crook close home.
There was a lot to like about this performance from Suvenna. She had the early speed to get to the front, she had the pace to travel well within herself in front, and the turn of foot that she showed to put distance between herself and her rivals at the furlong pole was impressive. She won well and she clocked a good time, just 0.06secs/furlong slower than standard. The ground was fast, but it was the fastest comparative time of the day by a fair way.
This was just the Arcano filly's fifth run ever. She put up the best performance of her career up to that point to win her maiden at Dundalk in May, and she stepped up on that on Sunday. The handicapper raised her 12lb to a mark of 87, but that was merited. She will have to step up in grade now, but she should be able to. She has a nice progressive profile and she will of interest in a better handicap over seven furlongs or a mile off her new mark. This was just her fifth race ever, it was her second win on the bounce, and she should continue to progress now. A half-sister to Bocca Baciata, who is probably at her best over nine or 10 furlongs, she should get a mile well. She wasn't stopping at the end of the seventh furlong on Sunday, and she could improve for a step up in trip.
