Fawaareq

Fawaareq did plenty wrong in the one-mile handicap at Newmarket last Friday, so it was to his credit that he won. He was keener than ideal through the early stages of the race, and he hung to his left when Paul Hanagan asked him to pick up on the run to the furlong pole. Even so, he kept going forward, and he kept on really well to get the better of pace-setter Ifwecan, with some progressive-looking horses behind them.

This was Owen Burrrows' colt's third win on the bounce. His three wins have been gained over seven furlongs, seven and a half furlongs and a mile, on soft ground and on fast ground, and at Newmarket's July Course and at Beverley. Also, this was just his seventh race ever, he just continues to progress.

The handicapper raised him 4lb for this, to a mark of 93, and that is a hike that he should be able to defy, given his profile. His rider said afterwards that he probably hung because of the fast ground, so he should do better again returned to easy ground. From the family of Ghanaati and Mawatheeq, he could progress again for stepping up to nine or 10 furlongs, and he could be a horse to keep in mind for the autumn, when the ground turns easy again.
