Best Solution

Best Solution was a little unlucky not to finish closer than fourth in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday. Settled nicely just behind the front rank and along the stands rail through the early stages of the race by William Buick, he was short of room when he wanted to go forward inside the two-furlong pole. Switched towards the far side of Whitecliffsofdover on the run to the furlong pole, that gap closed, and then, when he moved back to the near side of that rival, he was checked in his run as that horse moved a little to his left away from the whip. At that point, the winner Larchmont Lad had gone beyond recall, but Best Solution kept on nicely under the stands rail once in the clear, under just a hands and heels ride, to take fourth place, beaten a total of about a length and a half. He was in front 50 yards after the winning line.

This was another good performance from the Godolphin colt. A nice winner of his maiden over six furlongs at Glorious Goodwood in July on just his second run, he wasn't beaten far in a Group 3 race in Turkey on his third and final run before Thursday. Thursday's run was probably a step forward from that, and he got the seven furlongs well, he probably improved for the step up in trip. He is by Kodiac, but he is out of a Kingmambo mare who raced over 10 furlongs, and he is from the family of St Leger winner Brian Boru, so his future should lie over further than seven furlongs. He will be of interest wherever he goes next, he could be under-rated on the back of a fourth-place finish in a Group 3 race.
