Revocation

Revocation was a little unlucky not to win the two-mile-five-furlong handicap chase at Carlisle on Sunday. Always travelling well just behind the leader and ultimate winner Palm Grey, his jumping wasn't overly fluent at one or two of his fences, but he still travelled well as they ran to the home turn. He was good over the fourth last and he travelled best to the third last fence, but the leaders went away from him a little on the run to that fence, and he made a mistake at the obstacle, which shot rider Grant Cockburn to the buckle end, with the result that his momentum was checked. He got in tight to the second last, which effectively ended any remaining chance that he had of winning the race, but he still stayed on really well up the run in to get up for second place, splitting Palm Grey and Tanarpino.

It was a fine run by Lucinda Russell's horse. He had been impressive in winning on his previous outing at Newcastle, and a 9lb hike was severe enough, but he proved here that he was well up to his new mark of 122. He could have won this race had the ball hopped a little more kindly for him.

He is eight years old, but this was just his fifth chase, and it was just his 11th race under all codes. He is really lightly-raced for his age, and he retains plenty of scope for progression. Two and a half miles and soft ground suit him well.
