Lord George
Lord George did well to get as close as he did in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last Saturday. Well back in the field early on, he had to make his ground in the home straight down the outside, and he did well to get as close as he did in a race in which the pace held up well. The three horses who finished in front of him, Higher Power, Natural Scenery and Flymetothestars, all raced handily, as did the fifth horse My Reward. Lord George was the only one of the first five home who came from the rear.
This was a high-class staying handicap, as the Northumberland Plate invariably is, and Lord George ran really well in it off a mark of 96. The handicapper raised him just 1lb for it, and that was more than fair. He is only four and this was just his 10th race ever, so he still has scope for further progression as a stayer. Also, it was his first attempt beyond a mile and a half, he stayed the two-mile trip all right, but he could do even better back at a mile and six furlongs. He is a progressive stayer though, and it should be worth following him wherever he goes next.
