Tangled

Tangled finished just 12th of 13 in the 6f handicap, but he was only beaten a total of 5l and, more importantly, he has never been at his best at Ascot. He has run four times there now and he has finished fifth of five, 19th of 21, ninth of 10 and 12th of 13. He has beaten just four rivals in those four runs and he has been beaten by 41.

He did run an encouraging race on his previous run at York to finish sixth in a 1m handicap. He travelled well in rear through the race that day, but he was short of room at the 2f marker when he wanted to go forward. Philip Makin had to sit for a little while, and the race got away from him, but he did run on nicely towards the near side once in the clear to take seventh place. He can be marked up a fair bit on the bare form of the run. That was his first attempt at 1m and it looked like he stayed the trip well. He had been well out of form this season, but that was a step in the right direction. He won a big sales race at York last year and he finished third in the Group 3 Tattersalls Somerville Stakes at Newmarket. He reached a peak rating of 106 last year, so he could be a well-handicapped horse on a mark of 92 now. He goes well at Newbury and Newmarket and York, and he goes well on easy ground, so he will be of interest now as we move into the autumn.
