Laser Show
A Godolphin newcomer, Laser Show was weak in the market before the seven-furlong novice stakes, but he put up a nice performance to catch and pass Riot and win nicely. Settled just behind the pace and along the inside by Tom Queally, and a little keen early on, Riot looked set for victory when he joined his main market rival Moolhim and went on two furlongs out. But Tom Queally got a nice run out of Laser Show from behind, he moved up on the outside of the Qatar Racing colt and moved past him deep inside the final furlong, going on to win by a cosy neck in the end.
Saeed bin Suroor's horse is nicely bred, by New Approach out of a Street Cry mare from a high-class Australian family, and he should progress from this, his racecourse debut. This was a good performance, Riot had shaped well the previous month on his racecourse debut over this course and distance, and the front two pulled nicely clear here from Moolhim, a 240,000-euro yearling who also had the benefit of an encouraging racecourse debut under his belt. This race was won last year by last month's St James's Palace Stakes runner-up King Of Comedy, and it will be interesting to monitor Laser Show's progress now. He doesn't hold any lofty entries, and, given his weakness in the market, he may be a horse who is not overly impressive at home, so it may be that he will remain under-rated for a little while at least.
