The Little Yank
The Little Yank did well to win the bumper. They didn't go a great pace early on, and he appeared to get caught a little flat-footed when they quickened at the top of the home straight. As well as that, John Ryan's horse was short of room two furlongs out as Fortune Street came across him. Moved towards the outside by Liam Quinlan, he re-gathered his momentum and he finished off his race best of all to get up and beat long-time leader Celine Soprano by a half a length.
It was a game performance by the Westerner gelding, and it was another step forward. Quietly fancied on his racecourse debut at Listowel in September, he finished second that day behind the talented Soviet Pimpernel, who easily landed his maiden hurdle next time, with subsequent Roscommon bumper winner Wavelength back in third. The Little Yank himself ran out an impressive winner of a Tipperary bumper in the meantime. This was another step forward from that, and he should be able to go on again. He will be interesting if he steps up in grade in bumpers now, and he will also be of interest when he starts to jump hurdles.
