Brentford Hope
Brentford Hope is not really under the radar, but he was seriously impressive in winning the 10-furlong maiden on his racecourse debut. Richard Hughes' horse showed signs of inexperience beforehand, but he travelled through his race really well for Jamie Spencer. Moved toward the far side, he cantered up towards the leaders, and he picked up impressively when his rider asked him to go and win his race.
He came clear of Princess Bride, who shaped well on her previous race over seven furlongs at Newmarket, when she didn't have a lot of luck in-running, and Arthurian Fable and favourite Grain Of Sense, who had finished third and second in a novices' stakes at Newmarket 18 days earlier.
There is a good solid look to the form, and the manner in which the Mulryans' colt beat potentially useful-looking rivals was really impressive.
Bought by Richard Hughes for €130,000 at the Arqana breeze-up sale in May, he is by Camelot and he is out of a half-sister to Beautiful Romance, winner of the Group 2 Middleton Stakes over 10 and a half furlongs. His rider said afterwards that he won the race very easily, that he could have won it at any stage from the four-furlong marker. He is held in high regard by his trainer, and he should get a mile and a half next year okay. He is an exciting prospect.
