Elegant Escape
Elegant Escape did well to stay on to finish third in the Hennessy from the rear, in a race in which the early pace held up well. He was the only one of the first six home who was worse than mid-division early on, and he raced wide, which wasn't ideal. This run was up there with the best runs of his career, racing, as he was, in blinkers for the first time.
The handicapper raised him by 4lb to a mark of 164, which was fair, but, if he takes his chance in the Welsh National, he will get to race off his old mark, so he will be 4lb well-in. He was 9lb lower when he won the race last year, but he won with a little bit in hand, and the fact that he is proven at Chepstow is a big asset to take into a Welsh National. He should do better too if he is ridden up close to the pace.
