Lazuli

Lazuli was impressive in winning the Listed Scurry Stakes. His main market rival Sunday Sovereign ran below expectations, but there was still an awful lot to like about the way that he did it. Sharply away, he moved over to the far rail and, when William Buick asked him to pick up at the two-furlong marker, he came right away from his field in the manner of a horse who was in a different class to his rivals. Runner-up Keep Busy was rated 96 going into the race, and third-placed Dream Shot was rated 104, so it was a fine performance by Lazuli to beat them as easily as he did.

The Godolphin horse won two of his three races last year as a two-year-old, both over six furlongs, and he ran well for a long way in a six-furlong handicap at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas day on his debut this season. But he is all pace, and the drop to five furlongs here seemed to suit him well. He should be able to step up in class now into Group races.
