Soaring Monarch
Soaring Monarch ran a massive race in the seven-furlong handicap. Dropped in early on by Kevin Manning from his wide draw, he travelled well down the hill to the home turn. His rider had to wait for a few strides as they raced to the home turn, but he managed to find a nice split up the inside, and he wheeled wide into the home straight. By then, however, Billy Lee had gone for home on Talking Tough, and Soaring Monarch just couldn't catch him. In chasing him home though, he pulled well clear of the third horse, Sister Eliza.
It was a fine run by Peter Fahey's horse. It is very difficult to get close from a wide draw over seven furlongs at Galway, and he was unlucky to bump into the aptly-named Talking Tough, who raced from stall four and kept on well, given how far he pulled clear of the rest of the field. This was just his fifth run. Winner of his maiden at Limerick in June, he stepped forward from that on his next run when he finished fourth behind the talented Fame And Acclaim, a winner again since, in a rated race at Cork. This was his first handicap, he remains progressive and he will be of interest wherever he goes next. He holds an entry in the one-mile three-year-olds' handicap on Saturday, and he will be of interest if he takes up that engagement.
