Sons And Lovers
It wasn’t an overly strong-looking maiden that Sons And Lovers won at Newmarket on Saturday on his racecourse debut, but he came from well back in a race in which the early pace was not fast, and he was fastest through the penultimate furlong and the final furlong. Racing in a share of last place early on behind a moderate pace, he moved forward nicely when David Egan took him towards the outside at the three-furlong marker. He picked up well from there too, widest of all, he was strong through the final two furlongs and he just got up to win in the end, finishing a head in front of Placo, who had shaped encouragingly on his racecourse debut at Leicester.
Sons And Lovers was weak in the market beforehand too, so there is every chance that he will improve considerably for this. A half-brother to Spring Day, who won over six furlongs, and to Stagiaire, who won over a mile and six furlongs, Jane Chapple-Hyam's colt is by Prix du Jockey Club winner Sudy Of Man, so he should improve for stepping up in trip to a mile or even beyond. He should do better on easier ground too, and he will be of interest if he races again on easier ground before the end of the season.
