Samuel Colt

Samuel Colt did well to finish second in the Guineas Trial at Leopardstown last Sunday. Settled in mid-division early on by Gavin Ryan, and on the inside from stall one, he was crowded out of it a little on the run around the home turn, with the result that he was only seventh of the eight runners as they straightened up for home. He picked up well from there, however, he stayed on nicely on the far side. He was just run down by his lesser-fancied stable companion Battle Cry, who came wide and late, going down by just a half a length in the end, the first two pulling clear of their rivals.

Aidan O'Brien's colt won his maiden at The Curragh last October on heavy ground, but it is probable that he will be even better on better ground. By No Nay Never and a half-brother to Pasley, a winner over a mile and six furlongs, he should do better too when he steps up in trip. He will be of interest when he steps up to a mile and beyond.
