Past Winners » Indignant

12th-Jul-2013

I had this between Indignant, Nardin and Jubilante and, of the trio at the prices, I prefer Indignant.

Second in a decent nursery off near-top weight at Doncaster last November on her final run last season, Richard Hannon’s filly ran a cracker to finish second to Annecdote over today’s trip on fast ground at Newbury on her debut this term. It never really looked like she was going to beat the impressive winner that day, but she made nice ground on the near side to challenge the winner, who made her ground on the far side, and she was just nudged out all the way to the line once it was obvious that she couldn’t win, with the front three coming clear.

Annecdote has obviously made that form look a whole lot better than it did at the time, but going and landing the Listed Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot off an 8lb higher mark. Jonathan Portman’s filly is now rated 14lb higher than she was for the Newbury race.

Indignant couldn’t win a Sandown handicap last month off a 4lb higher mark, but there was still a lot to like about her performance. She travelled really well at the head of the main group of runners behind the breakaway leader, she was still on the bridle at the two-furlong pole as all her rivals came under pressure, and she looked the most likely winner of the race when she struck the front, but she was just worn down late on by the useful Secret Art.

She has been raised another 3lb for that, but she remains highly progressive. The ground was on the easy side at Sandown, she should be much happier back on better ground today, and back on an easier track. Richard Hughes, absent at Sandown, is back on board today, and the champion jockey is a massive asset these days.

Jubilante and Nardin are both dangers, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Indignant’s stable companion Beautiful View outrun massive odds, but Indignant is the bet.

INDIGNANT WON (ADV 11/2, SP 7/2)
