Breton Rock is a really lightly-raced horse for a race like this, but he is a talented one, and he has the potential to go a fair bit higher than his current mark of 97.

He wasn’t beaten far at Chester on his reappearance this season having reared and given away ground at the start, and he returned from a three-and-half-month break – during which he had been gelded – after his next run to win at the St Leger meeting at Doncaster.

He did have a trouble-free run over on the far side that day, and the third horse, Gold Hunter, might have given him a lot to think about had he enjoyed such a passage. However, the far side wasn’t really the place to be that week at Doncaster, the stands side was generally favoured, and that was a good performance from Breton Rock.

He proved he handles Ascot well when he ran well at the track over six furlongs last time. He just lacked the pace for that trip, but he kept on well on the outside of the far side group to finish third behind two unexposed horses. He returns to seven furlongs today, which is a positive. Indeed, a straight seven furlongs on easy ground is probably his optimum. He has been much better at the stalls since he has been gelded, he seems to have calmed down, and that will be important in a race like this.
