Past Winners » Brorocco

23rd-Sep-2017

Brorocco is a frustrating sort in that he seems to attract bad luck in-running.  That is his running style, he likes to be ridden in behind and he likes to pass horses, but he got no run at Epsom on Derby weekend, and he was unlucky again last time at York.

He travelled well behind the leaders that day, he moved up nicely and it appeared as if he was travelling like a winner, but the gap just wouldn’t materialise, and he ended up running on after the winner Eddystone Rock had flown to take fourth place.

He gets to race off the same mark today of 89, which is just 4lb higher than the mark off which he won the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom back in April.  At the time, you would have thought that he would be rated much higher than 89 at this stage of the season.

He has lots in his favour today, this is his distance, this is his ground, and the big field should generate the fast pace that he likes, and the fast pace should create gaps late on through which he should be able to deliver his challenge.  It is not guaranteed that there will be a fast pace, there is no obvious front-runner, but there should be.  Usually there are enough riders in these big-field races who don’t want to be too far back to generate a decent pace.

Also, Newbury has a good big wide long galloping home straight.  Hard luck stories are rare enough there and, if Brorocco gets the gaps, he could go close.

BROROCCO WON (ADV 10/1, SP 8/1)
