Midnight Shadow

13th-Nov-2021

… Midnight Shadow could also be a well-handicapped horse. Winner of the Grade 2 Dipper Chase at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day last year when Champ fell at the second last fence, he raced just three times last season, in the second of which he finished second behind Chatham Street Lad in the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham, off a mark of 148.

Pulled up in his final run last season, over hurdles at Wetherby, he didn’t race again until he reappeared this season and ran a big race to finish third in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree behind Allmankind.

The handicapper raised him by just 1lb for that to a mark of 147 and, rated 155 at his peak over fences, that is more than fair. He should come on for that, his first run since February, and we know that he goes well at the track – he has won twice there – and that he stays the trip. He goes well on goodish ground too and, an eight-year-old who has run just nine times over fences, he has the right mix of experience and potential for progression for a hot handicap like this.

MIDNIGHT SHADOW WON (ADV 9/1, SP 9/1)
