Robbies Rock

25th-May-2025

Robbies Rock has lots in his favour.  A talented hurdler, winner of a handicap at Cork in December as a three-year-old and second in the Fred Winter Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, his two runs on the flat since Cheltenham have both been good.

Gavin Cromwell’s horse ran better than the bare form suggests at Killarney last time, he got caught in traffic and wide as they quickened around the home turn, Mordor got first run on him, and he just couldn't catch him.  On the face of it, it was a good run, Mordor went into the race on an upward curve, but the pace wasn’t strong, the winner’s finishing speed was over 108% of overall speed, and it was difficult to make ground into a quickening pace.

The handicapper raised him by 2lb to a mark of 78, which was fair.  He is rated 127 over hurdles, so he still has some leeway off his flat mark.  And he is only four and he has run just eight times on the flat.  He still has scope for progression as a stayer on the flat.

ROBBIES ROCK WON (ADV 7/2, SP 5/1)
