Story Horse
4th-May-2025
I think that Story Horse has lots in his favour here.
He didn’t win until June last year, after eight runs and his third run as a four-year-old, but he won impressively, he picked up nicely off a sedate pace, and he progressed nicely from there last season. He won again at Haydock off a 7lb higher mark, and he rounded off his campaign by running in the Cesarewitch.
He ran in the Cesarewitch Trial too, but he probably doesn't fully stay that extreme trip. He was much happier back over a mile and six furlongs on his debut this season at Southwell, when he faded late on to finish third behind Caballo De Mar, tiring late on and shaping as if he would progress for the run. The winner won impressively again next time too off a 6lb higher mark.
Story Horse should progress from that now, and his mark of 82 is more than fair, 2lb lower than his peak last year. He goes well on fast ground, and he ran well for a long way in the Cesarewitch Trial last year, his first run at Newmarket, before his stamina started to ebb. Saffie Osborne is back on board, she is very good and she won on him at Haydock last year on the only occasion on which she has ridden him. And William Knight’s horses are in good form, Frost At Dawn was only just beaten at Newmarket yesterday, and Dual Identity ran well at Goodwood.
Wild Waves and Liam Swagger were also on my shortlist, but Story Horse is the bet.
