Royal Velvet
Royal Velvet
12th-Jul-2025
You can see why Miss Nightfall and Miss Information are high in the market for this, both after good runs at Ascot, but both are dropping down from a stiff mile to a fast seven furlongs, and they are both shorter than they should be in my book.
By contrast, this could be Royal Velvet’s optimum trip. She won a 0-85 handicap on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile in May, but she put up a better performance in defeat over seven furlongs on the July Course last time, over today’s course and distance. She hit the front a furlong out and looked a likely winner before just getting run down by Cracking Gold and Great Acclaim on the run up the hill.
That race is working out well. Great Acclaim ran well at Newmarket on Thursday, while the fourth horse Physique ran well to finish second in the opening handicap yesterday.
Royal Velvet should appreciate the return to the July Course, and the return to competition against her own gender, and she remains unexposed over seven furlongs. A 1lb hike is fine, William Buick is riding like a man inspired this week, and her draw in stall one is probably a positive.
ROYAL VELVET WON (ADV 15/2, SP 4/1)
