This is obviously a really competitive fillies’ sprint handicap, but I though that Star Of Mehmas should have been closer to the top of the market than she is.
Winner of three of her four races last season as a juvenile, Richard Hughes’ filly has continued her progression this season. She was only just beaten by Tropical Storm in the Listed Westow Stakes at York’s Dante meeting in May, and Tropical Storm went on to run in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.
She was only just beaten too in the Listed Scurry Stakes next time at Sandown, when she looked a likely winner deep inside the final furlong, before Sandown’s stiff finish caught her out and she lost two places close home.
You have to allow her her run in the Listed City Walls Stakes back at York last time, but she got worked up beforehand and she just didn’t give her running. That is a slight concern, that she may repeat the trick here, but that worry is more than factored into her odds. If she hadn’t run there, she would almost certainly be a much shorter price for today’s race than she is.
She should appreciate the drop from listed class into handicap company for the first time, and a mark of 98 is more than fair. She is only three, she has the potential to go higher still. Her high draw is not ideal, you would always prefer to race towards the far side on the straight track at York, but there is lots of pace drawn high. Ruby’s Profit is next door and Eclairage is even higher, so she should get a good tow into the race. Also, she will have Ryan Moore for company again, and that should go a long way towards negating any negative impact of her high draw.
Galaxy Zoo was on my shortlist, and Eternal Sunshine could go well at a big price, but Star Of Mehmas is the bet.
