Maranoa Charlie

Maranoa Charlie

I am backing Maranoa Charlie in the Prix de la Foret.

I thought that he ran better than the bare form of the run suggests last time in the Group 1 City of York Stakes at York.

Prominent in the main group that day behind a strong pace that Quinault set, he travelled really well early in the home straight, but he seemed to get out-paced at the two-furlong marker.  He came under a ride then, but he responded well to pressure.  He was short of room too at the furlong marker, but he stuck to his task gamely, getting up to take third place, racing on the far side, probably on the worst of the ground.

An impressive winner of a Group 3 race over today’s course and distance on soft ground in June, Christopher Head’s horse was only just beaten by Woodshauna in the Prix Jean Prat next time, when he had The Lion In Winter just behind him.  A classy individual who has raced just eight times, there should be more to come from him.

He has won over a mile, but seven furlongs is his optimum trip.  And while he ran well on fast ground at York, he should be more at home on today’s soft ground.  He could take a nice step forward today.

MARANOA CHARLIE WON (ADV 11/2, SP 22/5)
