Wellington Arch won this race last year. He is 14lb higher than he was then, but he goes into the race in even better form, and it is probable that this has been his target since.
He stayed on well to win a handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter last time off a mark of 132, a race in which he finished second last year off a mark of 120. A 5lb hike for that was not harsh, and it is probable that it was just a stepping stone to today, as that race was last year.
He led from early when he won this race last year, and he did well to win, that is a style of racing that is generally not well suited to Aintree’s hurdles track, in contrast to Aintree’s chase track. He can sit just behind the leaders these days, he doesn't have to lead, and that style of racing suits this track better. He goes well on goodish ground, and the yard's horses continue to be in good form.
