Mezcala

I thought that Mezcala should have been clear favourite for the Buckingham Palace.

Jack Channon’s horse was an impressive winner of the Spring Mile at Doncaster on his debut this season, a race that has been working out well since, and he ran a big race last time in a good one-mile handicap at Newbury on Lockinge Stakes day to finish third behind Classic off an 8lb higher mark.

He out-ran the bare form of the run too. He was drawn in stall one, on the far side as the field concertinaed towards the stands rail, he didn’t have much cover for much of the race, yet he picked up well on the far side at the two-furlong marker, and looked a likely winner. In the end, he was run down close home by Classic and Indalo.

The form of that race received a nice boost yesterday with runner-up Indalo and fourth-placed Ebt’s Guard finishing third and fourth of 28 in the Royal Hunt Cup.

The handicapper raised Mezcala by just 1lb for that run to a mark of 94, and that was more than fair. He shouldn’t mind the drop down to seven furlongs today, he is pacey and a fast-run stiff seven furlongs could actually be close to optimum for him. He is a progressive four-year-old who has run just seven times in his life, and he has a nice high draw.

MEZCALA WON (ADV 17/2, SP 9/2)
