Subtefuge

Subtefuge put up a really nice performance to win a competitive handicap at Warwick on Tuesday, beating the useful Invincible Soul into second place with easy Hamilton winner Fibs And Flannel well back. The Henry Cecil-trained filly travelled well up on the outside disputing the lead in the early stages, then picked up nicely, coming over towards the stands side in the home straight to come clear and win easily. On her previous run she had finished third behind Horseradish and Rule Of Nature in a seven-furlong handicap at Yarmouth, and that pair had gone on to finish first and second in a good handicap at Chester’s May meeting. That is looking like strong handicap form now.

This was just her sixth ever run, and she is certain to improve. The handicapper has given her 8lb for this performance, but she is highly progressive and it may not be enough to halt her progress. This was her first run over a mile, and she seemed to improve for the step up in trip. She could even get further than a mile on this evidence, and she will be interesting wherever she goes next.
