Midas Touch

Midas Touch ran a cracker in the Irish Derby at The Curragh last Sunday. Bright Horizon set a solid pace from the outset, and Midas Touch was close to the pace throughout, sat in third, just behind At First Sight. Colm O’Donoghue sent the son of Galileo on fairly early, just as they rounded the turn for home, and they opened up a two and a half length lead, but Johnny Murtagh tracked him all the way with Cape Blanco, and they headed Midas Touch just over a furlong out. Midas Touch rallied again, and he stuck to his task admirably inside the last furlong, keeping on all the way to the line, only going down by a half a length in the end.

This was a solid effort from Midas Touch, he tracked a blistering pace throughout, showed a fine turn of foot to take it up and he beat all bar the favourite in a race that was run in a time was over three seconds faster than standard. Midas Touch needs every yard of a mile and a half, and similar tactics saw him win impressively on his seasonal debut in the Derrinstown in another very fast time. Colm O’Donoghue reported that he did not handle the track at Epsom and this performance was a truer reflection of his ability. His pedigree is all about stamina, by Galileo, out of a Darshaan mare, and the St Leger is an obvious target for him now.
