Field Day

Field Day was an impressive winner of a one-mile fillies’ handicap at Salisbury on Saturday. Brian Meehan’s filly tracked the leading pair throughout, she made good ground to close on them at the two-furlong marker and she picked up really nicely to take it up from Frances Stuart just inside the final furlong and to go on and win quite cosily under no great pressure from Martin Dwyer.

This was only a four-runner 0-95 handicap, but Field Day did it really impressively. Once thought of as a Classic filly (she won the same Newmarket maiden at the back end of last season in which Sariska and Dar Re Mi had run), this was just her third ever run, she is a big scopey type who was slow to come to hand this season, and she should continue to progress now. The handicapper has raised her 6lb to a mark of 92 for this, but that under-estimates her potential quite considerably. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see her step out of handicap company for her next race, and she should be at least up to fillies’ listed or Pattern standard. She is an exciting prospect.
