Smarty Socks
Smarty Socks was a really impressive winner of a seven-furlong Class 4 handicap at York on Sunday. He missed the break, as is his is wont, but the pace was fairly fast and he travelled well in the rear of the field. He came right through on the inside rail up the straight, and he actually probably got to the front too soon, idled and was probably value for more than the winning margin.
This was only a 0-80 handicap, a Class 4 contest, but Smarty Socks carried top weight of 10st and he completely out-classed his rivals. He is trained by David O’Meara, who has done really well since taking over from Jim Hetherton, to whom he was assistant trainer previously. Smarty Socks is quirky, he has refused to race before and the likelihood is that he will always give his rivals a headstart, but his last three runs have been promising and he is deserving of a step up in class now.
