Global Giant

Global Giant did well to get as close as he did in the 10f handicap, racing in rear in a race in which the pace held up well. He travelled well to the 3f marker in behind, but he ran into a little bit of traffic, with the result that Gerald Mosse had to take him back a little and switch towards the inside, after which he kept on well to take third place.

They didn’t go a very strong gallop, the winner Communique travelled in mid-division from early, while the runner-up Zaman was the early leader. Global Giant disappointed on his previous run, he finished last of eight behind Wells Farhh Go in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket’s July meeting, but that 1m 5f probably stretched his stamina. He had run well on his previous run, staying on into fifth place in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. Again he came from the rear that day in a race in which it was probably an advantage to race handily. Three of the first four home in that race occupied three of the first five places from flagfall, and Global Giant was never closer than he was at the finish. It was his first attempt at 10f and he stayed it well.

The handicapper raised him by 11lb to a mark of 99 for that, but he proved at Goodwood that he was up to that type of mark, and another 2lb hike is fair enough. He should be able to continue to progress at this trip. A fast pace over 10f is probably close to optimum for him. He was a 25/1 shot for Thursday’s race, and he may remain under the radar a little.
