Iconic Choice

Iconic Choice did well to get as close as she did in the Fred Darling Stakes. She was behind early on and, while she didn’t get stopped in her run, she had to weave her way through traffic before getting into the clear. In the end, she finished best of all on the near side, and just failed by a nose to catch Dandhu.

Tom Dascombe’s filly may not have been advantaged by racing close to the stands rail, you generally want to be in the centre at Newbury. Also, she came under pressure early and she finished well, which left the impression that she could improve for stepping back up to 1m. She was one for one over 1m last year as a juvenile. She had plenty of racing last year, she raced nine times, with the result that she may be under-rated when she faces more lightly-raced fillies, as she was here. But she won four of her last five races last year, she rounded off her season by winning a listed race on easy ground at Newbury, and this was probably a step up on that. It may be that she remains under-rated. She will be of interest now stepped back up to 1m and ideally on easy ground.
