Cepage

Cepage ran better than his finishing position suggests in the Ultima Handicap Chase. He was free and keen early on, and he made a move at the top of the hill first time, at the eighth fence, to take over in front. From there, he travelled and jumped well, and he lasted in front until the second last fence. He faded from there as his early exertions and the trip took their toll, finishing only seventh in the end.

Venetia Williams’ horse has had plenty of racing, but he is only eight and this was his first attempt at this type of trip. He goes well at Cheltenham, and he will be of interest back there. He goes well at Kempton and Aintree and Ascot too, and he could get three miles all right at an easier track if he can learn to settle a little better.
