Dawn Rising

Dawn Rising put up an encouraging performance to finish fourth in the 10-furlong three-year-olds’ maiden. Held up early on by Padraig Beggy, he came under a ride as they turned for home, but he started to stay on from about two and a half furlong out. Only eighth passing the two-furlong marker, he kept on well from there on the outside, finishing off his race best of all to get up for fourth place, beaten a total of less than two lengths by the winner Galileo Chrome.

This was a good run by Aidan O’Brien’s colt. A full-brother to Irish Derby winner Sovereign, it is significant that he made his racecourse debut last year in the Group 3 Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown. He still looked a little green here, he should come on again for this, his seasonal debut and just his second run, and he could do even better stepped up to a mile and a half.
