Tomfre

There was a lot going on in the seven-furlong handicap, Ascension missed the break quite badly and made ground sharply early in the home straight to hit the front, while the ultimate winner Well Of Wisdom badly hampered Surf Dancer deep inside the final furlong. But Tomfre didn’t get a clear run in behind either. Ralph Beckett’s horse was caught in behind Well Of Wisdom and Surf Dancer at the two-furlong marker, Rob Hornby had to check him, and he had to work to get going forward again as they quickened in front of him. While he was helped by the scrimmaging between the front two, he still had to check outside the pair of them, and he finished best of all, just failing by a nose to catch the Godolphin horse.

Tomfre was busy last year as a juvenile, he ran in seven races, but he continued to progress with racing, he won four of them, including a good seven-furlong nursery at Newmarket in October on soft ground off a mark of 90. He sees out this seven furlongs well, and he could improve for a step up to a mile. He should also improve when he can get back on easier ground.
