Captain Conby

Captain Conby only finished third in the end behind Knappers Hill in the Rising Stars Novices’ Chase at Wincanton last Saturday, but he was keen early on, he was awkward at one or two of his fences, and he jumped consistently to his left. He travelled well for much of the race though, he was still on the bridle when they turned for home before he tired from the third last fence, as his early exertions took their toll.

Sixth in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham last March, there is lots of stamina in Captain Conby’s pedigree, but he is also related to Flagship Uberalles. Dusty Sheehy’s horse was impressive in winning his beginners’ chase over an extended two miles at Killarney in August, before he finished second behind the top-class Sharjah in a Grade 3 contest at Tipperary in October. It may be that he will be under-rated after this performance, but he remains a talented individual, and he will be of interest when he goes left-handed again.
