Soprano

Soprano did well to get as close as she got in the Coral Distaff at Sandown on Saturday. Held up early on by Billy Loughnane, she was last as they turned for home and she was widest of all into the home straight. She made good ground down the near side, she got the better of Regal Jubilee and Clove Hitch on the near side, but Regal Jubilee’s lesser-fancied stable companion Spiritual kept going well on the far side, she made all the running, and Soprano couldn’t bridge the gap.

It was still a good run in defeat though by George Boughey’s filly. She stayed on well to win the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot on her previous run, stepped up to a mile for the first time, and there could be more to come from her now over this trip. Out of a half-sister to Obviously, a dual Grade 1 winner over a mile, she remains unexposed at this trip. She has form on this easy ground too, but it may be that she will be seen to even better effect back on better ground. Her Sandringham win was gained on good to firm ground.
