Miss Cogent

Miss Cogent ran a lot better than her finishing position in seventh place suggests in the 5f Group 3 juveniles' race at The Curragh on Saturday. Last of the 10 runners out of the stalls, Johnny Murtagh's filly was still last when they passed the 2f pole, but she travelled well. Moved towards the far side by Billy Lee as they ran past the 1f pole, she picked up well from there, and she made ground on the far side all the way to the line. She only finished seventh of 10, but she was beaten a total of a neck for fourth, and she was only two lengths behind the winner Hit The Bid. She was actually up level with the leaders at the pull-up.

She has had plenty of racing for a juvenile, but she appears to be thriving for it. She was a 50/1 shot for Saturday's race, and the fact that she only finished seventh may mean that the quality of her run may go under the radar. It was probably the best run of her career by a fair way, and it may not be a coincidence that it was her first time racing in a hood. She also responded well to these hold-up tactics. It may be that the market continues to under-rate her and, winner of her maiden at Cork in June on soft ground, she could thrive on soft ground in the autumn.
